High waisted wool trousers

These are Burda 08-2009-105, which I made at the beginning of winter and haven't had a chance to photo until now.  I love how cozy these pants are (heavy herringbone wool, lined to the knees in Ambiance), and the cut is so flattering and office appropriate.  The thing that bothers me, though, after a winter of wear, the hooks and eyes are becoming visible at the front.  I haven't gained any weight around the middle, I interfaced the fabric, and i don't know why this has happened.

Is there some trick to sewing hooks and eyes that I forgot?

  1. Maybe the hooks/eyes are too close to the edge of the waistband? I don't know...sorry! These are very cute though, so I hope you can figure out the closure issue for your next pair. :-)

  2. Hooks and eyes are probably at the top of list of things I hate to do. I can never get them right - so I'm no help at all.

  3. Darn it! Those are great looking pant- too bad you are having trouble with the hook and eyes. I tend to agree with CGCouture- maybe if you could move them inside the waistband a little more, they wouldn't show so much. I don't know of any tricks either. I hate the little boogers!

  4. These trousers are so lovely; I hope you can work out a good solution. Hooks and eyes on trousers are something I avoid too, and I would usually put in a button/buttonhole instead.

  5. Great trousers. I agree that moving the hook and eye further in may help. They do stretch out a bit with wear.

  6. I get the same problem with hooks and eyes. Sometimes I wonder if topstitching a square around the hooks and eyes, through all layers of the waistband, will help? Not that I have tried it.

    These look really lovely trousers.

  7. These are fantastic! I was so mesmerised by the flattering fit and shape that I just didn't notice the hook and eye problem. These high waisted trousers look so elegant.

  8. These look great on you! Yes, I've had that hook and eye problem too. Checking out some of my better made RTW pants, they often also have a button on the inside waistband - on other side of the fly to the side of the hook and eye. It seems to me that this button takes the strain of the waistband across the fly so that the hook and eye do less work... but I've yet to try it.

  9. Those look great on you. I want to get better at making pants. I am about to try another pair. I have always had hook and eye problems. I did not even notice your hook and eye problems because the pants look so fabulous on you. I really wouldn't worry about it (easier said than done), but I have found that I notice my own sewing "issues" much more than anyone else.

  10. Superb job on the fit! I am so freaking jealous of your pants. No hints on the hooks and eyes. If interfacing wasn't strong enough maybe a short length of boning? It seems like cheating, but I have been known to cheat.

  11. Very flattering fit on these! Beautiful job! I think the button trick that Gabrielle mentioned would be a good solution.

  12. No real new suggestions about hooks/eyes... I have some RTW trousers with them and they have the button also, which seems to take most of the stress/pull. Mainly I just wanted to say what a great fit you got on these! Wow! The last pair of pants I attempted was such a fail, I put the machine away for months.
