Vogue 1051: Wide legged pants

This is probably the 4th pair of pants I've made with this pattern.  Hands down, this is my favorite waistband as far as fit goes.  In a size 6, 8, or 10, it's still a flattering waistband, the fit in the hips changes by size though.  (Admittedly, size 10 swathes me in fabric but the first pair I made was the size 10 because I wanted big pants -- go figure.)  I petite them by 2" and taper to the size 6 from the knee to hem so that it doesn't look like I have sails around my lower legs.  I am still up in the air about what my size is, because I like my pants more fitted in the hips and have made them a size smaller in the past so that they are tight in the hips and upper thighs but because I need professional looking clothes opted to make these in my prescribed size.  I'm not sure that I like how these fit, though.

My apartment is too small for a full length mirror, so I've found that taking photos gives me a good idea of how my clothes fit.  You get to see, too!

The fabric is a stretch gray wool gabardine, origins unknown.

With a modelish pose, fit looks ok.

Straight on like this, though they look saggy in the thigh.  Who knew they were so wrinkly from sitting in my lap to sew the hooks and eyes?  Not me, apparently.

Back seems OK.

Next up are some skinnies with a black wool ponte and a dress shirt.  I think that'll set me up well, along with the last 3 dresses I sewed, with some basics for work.  I'll add more grownup clothing to my closet over time.

  1. I have been seriously considering that pattern for a long time, I love the waistband. You did a good job. The next time it is on sale I will buy it. Thanks for the inspiration :)

  2. What pattern are you going to use for skinnies? I need some skinnier pants and all of my recently made trousers have a fit/cut/style similar to your Vogue pants.

The pockets on the back look great. I usually do double welt pockets and they never look quite right.

  3. The back looks fantastic!! I don't think they're too loose in the front, but I do prefer looser pants. :) These pants have been on my list to do for like 4 years... I definitely need to get on it!

  6. These look fantastic. You achieved a great fit. I don't think there is such a thing as perfect fit when it comes to pants.

  7. The shape is fantastic but I do think they're too big. Do you already have a lot of wool pants? I made some recently and found that they loosen up during the day as they get worn. Maybe the stretch in these pants will help them retain their shape. For me, I made my second pair a size smaller than the first. They were snug the first time I tried them on, but they looked better than the others as the day went on.

  8. It's a great trouser shape for you! Agree with some others that they may be a bit big, but still totally wearable. Maybe using stretch you could've gotten away with the usual smaller size? I'm terrified of sewing pants though, so I'm really no help. Wool gabardine? Yeow, sounds awesome!

  9. Wow, these really compliment your shape. You're tiny to begin with so pretty much anything will look good on you. The fit is excellent. Look at the front, you don't have whiskers so the crotch depth is perfect. The back looks great too. Maybe it's the width more so at the knees that may need a little adjusting.

  11. Hey Melissa, Thanks for your comment about my trousers. These trousers show no lack of skill - especially the back pockets. Well done!

  14. Nice looking pants! Is that the Alice and Olivia pattern? I think I have that one. In case I ever want to make pants. You are making it look easy.

  15. I'm supposed to be finishing (truth:making!) grey pants myself. I love yours and shaped waistbands are the best!
