Menswear and sleeves, Burda 08-2009-128

I swear, the August 2009 Burda is my favorite.  I've sewn so many things from this issue, now including this dress.  The only part of this dress that I'm not doing absolute cartwheels over is the front of the skirt, which is probably due to operator error rather than the pattern.  No matter how much I press it, I can't get the seams or the hem to stop rippling.  All I need to complete the picture is a belt...

There is a half lining for the bodice only, though you could line the skirt too with a straight lining.  I used a glen plaid wool and rayon for the lining.  The only alteration I made was to shorten the skirt by 2 inches.

I have a feeling I didn't pull the lining down in the front before taking this photo.

I put in a center back lapped zipper.  It's a metal zipper that tends to get stuck.

No pooch from the side!
I opted against the bow belt.  That would be a little too twee on me.

  4. It looks wonderful!! The fit, especially in the back, is amazing. I've been a little afraid of this design, as I was afraid of those pleats, but every version I've seen looks great, so maybe I should go for it!

  7. Love. Really, love. I was a little nervous about a plaid on this dress because of matching seams. But, it's so CUTE.

  8. So adorable--I want to know you how you got it without pooch! I dismissed the pattern because other projects I've done with similar tulip pleats have major poochage.

  9. This looks so good! I can see where the poochie thing would be an issue. Great dress.

  11. Lovely dress. I suggest that you chop off the hem and replace with bias hemming tape. This has worked for me with similar hemline problems.

  14. I've made this dress - including a grosgrain bow belt 'cos I like a bit of twee now and then! I found that to fix the hem issue I chopped nearly all of the seam allowance off once I was sure of the correct length, and just turned up about 1.5cm and machine stitched.

  15. What a cute dress! Looks great on you! I love that issue, too, but I have yet to make anything from it... I love just flipping through and one of these days I'll make this dress and other things.

  16. Thank you for all the kind words everyone, and to Gail and Kristy for suggestions to rehem!

@Slapdash, I think it's the design, not me. The fittedness in the back of the dress and the waist keeps the tulip pleats from getting poochy.
